Term 1
Do you know a quick way to make a number between 0-20? Do you know how to count on? If not, I can tell you! Maybe you could ask me after dinner??
NUMICON SHAPES
This term we have being learning about numbers. We have worked with a partner and in groups to identify, sequence and represent numbers between 0 and 20.

NUMICON SHAPES
What is Numicon? Lets have a look....http://www.numicon.com/
We have been using numicon shapes to help us learn about number. Our teachers gave each of us a bag of numicon shapes and asked us to explore them. Here we are exploring/questioning/investigating and discovering how these
shapes relate to number!!
Patterns
This week we have begun to discuss what the term "Pattern" means.
- How do we know what a pattern is or looks like?
- How do we create patterns?
- How do we continue a pattern that has already been started?
- Are all patterns the same?
The teachers gave us lots of different materials to explore with. They gave us australian animals, shapes, counters, paddle pop sticks, teddy bears and blocks. We needed to use these materials to investigate and explore how we could make patterns and what we though a pattern was. I wonder if you can see some of the patterns that we were creating through our explorative play??
Inquiry
This term in Inquiry we are answering the question "Can we live alone?" "How do we know we are not alone? We are learning about Community and how we are part of different communities.
Through our ignite phase, some of us discussed how we believe that belonging is like having our own Mother Teresa Garden and our own Kindergarten garden. We also linked this earning to our Religion unit "God Loves Me". We believe that each plant, flower, seed, vegetable or fruit is just like us. Created by God to be unique and special. Just like we need love and food to grow so do our gardens. they need us to look after them, give them water and sunshine and then they will grow just like us. Our kindergarten garden at the back of our room belongs to us but our little garden near the playground is part of the Mother Teresa community. It belongs to the whole community and we work together to look after it.
First we turn the soil - Anabelle
Then we make a hole with our finger - Annalise
Next we put the seeds or seedlings in the hole - Chloe
After that we cover the seeds and seedlings with the soil - John-Luke
Finally we water the garden - Jonah
Another task/challenge we were given this term was to create our own representation of being alone by using either play dough or sketching our representation. To begin with we had to use drama and our body to show how we would look and feel if we were alone. The teachers then took a photo of us presenting our alone drama pose. We then looked at our photos and used them to guide our artwork. Take a look at some of our representations of being alone through the use of playdough.
Every day our writing just gets better and better. We are becoming more creative and independent. We are having a go and trying our best. Every day we write something new. Sometimes we write about our sight words, sometimes about he big book that we are reading in class. Other times we write about our Inquiry topic and what we did on the weekend. We even have Free Choice writing where we use our imagination and creativity. Take a look at some of our amazing writing. We hope you are as proud of us as we are of ourselves...
13/3/13 Our garden is growing and we are excited. we can't wait to eat some strawberries, lettuce, carrots and cucumbers during fruit break. We are also looking forward to starting to use some of our herbs. Yesterday we saw our first strawberry..the photo is on its way. While looking at our garden we wondered about many things. Some of our 'I wonder' questions were:-
I wonder.....
- what is eating our cucumber leaves? - Michael
- if there are any worms are in our garden? - Moksh or ants? - Kailan - or maybe a caterpillar? - Jonah
- why our cucumber leaves look yellow and brown? - Thalia
- Maybe it is getting too much water - Jonah - or maybe too much sun - Nyssa
- what other animals we might find in our garden? - Annie - i think we will find insects - Marcus
- I wonder if the same animal will eat our herbs? - Jean and Marcus
- if the sun is changing the colour of the leaves and making the leaves and plant die? - Jonah
- what makes the garden grow?- Aayan
- if we will see snails in our garden? - John-Luke
- if we are putting too much soil on our plants and they are not alive anymore? - Andy
- when we will see the fruit? - Giselle
- if cockroaches eat plants and flowers in gardens? - Daniella
- if the birds are coming to eat the plants at night? -Jhetrelle
- How do the plants stay tall and green? - Isabelle
- when we can start to eat the fruit and vegetables? - Kailan
- why the herbs are not being eaten? - Peter
- I can see a strawberry - Alannah
I WONDER what questions you might have for us about our gardens? Remember we have a Herb Garden, Fruit and Vegetables Garden and a Flower Garden.
